ICS Learners Immerse Themselves in Japanese Culture
Nine of our learners and two of our staff embarked on an unforgettable cultural immersion journey to Japan from the 18th to the 31st of January. This extraordinary experience was made possible through our membership with Roundsquare, offering students unique opportunities to broaden their horizons and embrace the richness of other cultures.
The program began with a thrilling ride on Japan’s iconic bullet train, marking a first-time experience for all participants. This technological marvel symbolized the remarkable advancements of Japan and set the tone for a journey filled with lots of discovery and learning of the different ways of life in that part of the world.
A warm welcome awaited our learners at the Kyoto Culture Museum, where they were treated to a performance of classical Japanese music. The museum tour provided an insightful exploration of the culture, history, and evolution of Kyoto, Japan’s ancient capital.
A highlight of the trip was an engaging visit to two Roundsquare Schools, Yakumo Academy and Tamagawa Academy, where our students had the chance to interact with their Japanese peers, sharing stories and exchanging cultural insights. These connections emphasized the beauty of diversity and the power of education in bridging cultural gaps.
At Tamagawa Academy, our learners were immersed in the artistry of Japanese calligraphy, learning to write their names in Japanese characters—a skill that not only celebrated the art form but also deepened their appreciation of Japan’s linguistic heritage. The visit included a stop at the school’s Planetarium, where captivating documentaries on space left the students in awe of the universe’s vastness. As Ghanaians, our learners proudly presented the head of Tamagawa Academy with a selection of Ghana’s finest chocolate, made from the country’s world-renowned cocoa. This thoughtful gesture not only showcased Ghana’s rich heritage but also gave their Japanese hosts a literal taste of Ghana’s sweetness.
The group also visited the Shinto Shrine, a sacred site that offered a glimpse into Japan’s spiritual traditions and practices. The serene atmosphere of the shrine provided a moment of reflection, allowing the students to connect with the rich spiritual legacy of the Japanese people.
This trip was more than just an adventure; it was a transformative experience that inspired our learners to embrace cultural diversity, foster international friendships, and develop a global perspective. Through Round Square and such immersive programs, we continue to create avenues for our students to grow into well-rounded, culturally aware individuals ready to make their mark on the world.
