Global Learning Experiences: ICS Students Engage in Cultural Exchanges Across Four Continents in 2024
In today’s interconnected world, fostering global awareness and cross-cultural understanding is crucial. At the International Community School (ICS), we have long recognized this and made global learning experiences a cornerstone of our educational philosophy. For over two decades, we have provided students with invaluable opportunities to broaden their perspectives through international exchange programs. These experiences expose our learners to diverse educational systems, cultures, and lifestyles, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in a globalized society. This year, as in previous years, we partnered with Round Square to engage our learners in exchange programs in New York, Atlanta-Georgia, Kenya, and India. Additionally, we organized a language immersion program in France for our learners.
Programme Highlights
United States – Hackley School, New York
In April of this year, our learners experienced the academic excellence of Hackley School, a private college preparatory school located in Tarrytown, New York, and a member of the Ivy Preparatory School League. Learners collaborated with their peers on special projects, with one of our learners, Marie-Ann Mbrokoh-Ewoal, performing alongside students in the Performing Arts Society at Hackley. The exchange provided a unique platform for students to engage in discussions, share Ghanaian culture through presentations, and foster a deeper understanding of the complexities of our world. The multicultural environment at Hackley School allowed our students to gain new insights, develop a more nuanced global perspective, interact with students, and enjoy the city of New York.
Kenya – Brookhouse School
At Brookhouse School in Nairobi, Kenya, ICS students were welcomed into a dynamic and diverse learning environment. During their stay, they engaged in innovative educational practices and participated in community service projects that highlighted the importance of social responsibility and active citizenship. The exchange also offered a rich cultural experience, as students explored local traditions, arts, and the stunning wildlife Kenya is known for. This blend of academic rigour and cultural immersion broadened our students’ perspectives and enhanced their appreciation for global diversity.
India – Scindia Boys School
This summer, two of our students, Joel and Theodore, had the unique opportunity to participate in the Round Square exchange program at Scindia Boys School in India. For four weeks, from July to August, they both had the chance to experience the academic and extracurricular life at the Scindia school. They also visited amazing sites, including the renowned Taj Mahal, which is widely known as the seventh wonder of the world. Engaging with the country’s rich history, traditions, and academic practices, they had multicultural experiences and made global connections. They also had the opportunity to share their Ghanaian cultural heritage with the Scindia School Community. These experiences were truly immense and worth cherishing for a lifetime.
United States – Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School, Atlanta, Georgia
In Atlanta, Georgia, students adapted to the lifestyle of their colleagues at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. With guidance from their host families, our learners experienced everyday classroom sessions, participated in school sports, engaged in leadership workshops, and enjoyed learning about the school’s culture.
France – Language Immersion
In partnership with the AKAYE French Center, we sent a select group of our students to France from August 2nd to August 18th, 2024, for a language immersion program. The program was designed to provide an unforgettable experience, enhancing students’ linguistic skills and expanding their knowledge of French culture. In line with the old saying, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” our students did not only engage in classroom activities at the Akaye Learning Center but also immersed themselves in French culture by visiting historic sites and popular attractions such as the Port Boinot Museum, a chocolate workshop at L’Atelier du Goût, bakery visits, the Eiffel Tower, and fun activities at Futuroscope.
Impact on Students
Personal Growth
These exchange programs were transformative experiences for our students, contributing significantly to their personal and academic development. By navigating new environments, overcoming language barriers, and embracing different cultural norms, students built confidence, independence, and a strong sense of global awareness. The challenges they faced and the friendships they forged have left an indelible mark on their lives.
Future Outlook
As we look to the future, we are committed to expanding our exchange programs to ensure that more students can benefit from these life-changing experiences. To us, global education is not just about visiting new places; it’s about shaping future leaders who are compassionate, informed, and ready to make a difference in the world. With our growth mindset and a mission of going PLACES, we hope to visit more countries, immerse ourselves in their cultures, gain more experiences, and create fun and enriching memories for our students.
