Preschool Reading Immersion: The Joy of the ‘Surprise Reader’ Programme

 In Early Childhood Education

At our preschool, we believe that a love for reading begins with joyful, shared experiences,  and nothing captures this spirit better than our beloved Surprise Reader programme. This heartwarming initiative brings parents into the classroom to partner with teachers, sharing the magic of storytelling with our young learners.

At scheduled times, parents become “surprise guests,” delighting the children by reading their favourite books aloud. The excitement on the children’s faces as they eagerly anticipate who the next reader might be is simply priceless. Some parents add an extra layer of joy by bringing small treats, making each session even more memorable. In a playful tradition of gratitude, children enthusiastically decorate their parents’ faces with colourful stickers, a cheerful honour worn with pride.

Beyond the laughter and fun, the Surprise Reader programme plays a significant role in strengthening the vital bond between home and school. It fosters a community where families are actively engaged in their child’s learning journey, reinforcing the importance of literacy and shared experiences. The impact is immediate,  proud smiles light up the children’s faces when their parents arrive, and from that moment on, something shifts within them. They become more confident, more expressive, and more eager to engage.

To further enrich the programme and create opportunities for all families to participate, we are thrilled to introduce Virtual Surprise Reader Sessions. For parents unable to attend in person, we now offer two options: join the classroom live via video call to read and interact in real time, or submit a pre-recorded, child-friendly reading session that can be played during class. This inclusive addition ensures that every child experiences the magic of hearing and seeing their parent share a story with classmates, no matter the distance.Looking ahead, we are taking the programme to exciting new heights by integrating artificial intelligence. Soon, each reading session will be recorded and transformed into delightful animated videos using AI technology. These animations will be stored on our school’s learning platform and in class diaries, allowing children to revisit and relive these special moments whenever they wish,  creating a timeless library of memories and motivation.

The Surprise Reader programme is much more than a reading activity; it is a catalyst for our children’s development. It builds their confidence, nurtures their communication skills, and deepens their love for learning. Together with our families, we are laying a foundation that will support and inspire our young learners for years to come.
